Before starting your herbal treatments, always do a patch test. Dab a little of your preparation on the pulse point of your wrist or in the crook of your elbow.

Leave it unwashed for 12 hours to see whether you have an allergic reaction to it. Always be sure of the identification of the herbs you are using and if ever you are in doubt, consult your doctor or skin specialist. Many people are allergic to a wide range of ingredients and I urge you to tread with care and always test your blends and mixtures, lotions and salves before using them. (more…)

In making up the simple recipes, there are various methods of preparing herbs for use in lotions and creams. The methods listed below will help you to get started.

Decoction

A decoction of herb usually means the boiling up of the herb, and it is often prepared by using roots, stems, bark and berries, ie the hard parts of plants. The herb, or part of the herb, is boiled for about 15 minutes and then allowed to cool. The resulting liquid is drawn off and used, and the herb is discarded. (more…)

Eczema Home Healing Remedies

Eczema and dermatitis (which simply means inflammation of the skin) are both terms used to describe non-contagious inflammatory skin conditions. The skin is usually red and itching with a rash, or there may be spots which can resemble small blisters which “weep” — ooze clear fluid to form a crust “Dry eczema” involves a thickening and drying of the skin and is often characterized by dry, flaky patches.

Allergies — to chemicals, metals or certain foods — are a common cause and in children milk intolerance (especially among those who have not been breast- fed) is often the culprit. Since human milk is an excellent source of gamma-linolenic acid, the illness has more recently been regarded as a failure in GLA metabolism. Persuading children to drink soya milk instead is not always easy, although it can often improve the condition. Food allergy also has aspects of addiction and dependence and children can literally be hooked on milk so, when the food is withdrawn, they can become irritable and unpleasant — much to their parents’ despair. Many herbs are quite safe for children — although unfortunately, the taste is often far from pleasant and administering the remedy can prove a problem. Giving babies weak infusions of soothing herbs, such as chamomile or linden, by bottle from a very early age can encourage acceptance of herby flavours, while dosing breast-fed babies can often be best achieved by the mother taking the herbal remedy herself, as many of the active ingredients will then pass into the breast milk. This is an especially neat solution for colic and wind remedies (see below), which can thus be dispensed precisely at feeding time. (more…)

TREATING DIARRHEA IN CHILDREN: Children dehydrate very quickly by losing fluid and salts in the body due to diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. It is important to replace the fluids through any liquid the child will drink, and to continue to feed them the liquid.

Prepare the following rehydration drink and give at the onset of diarrhea. Mix together 1 teaspoon of table salt, 8 teaspoons sugar, and add to 5 cups of water. (If you have time, sterilize the water by boiling it, but be sure to cool it before giving it to the child.) Give 1 cup each time the child has a bowel movement, half of that for a smaller child. Spoon-feed the babies. Let the child drink as much as they want. You can stop giving it as soon as the child stops having loose bowel movements or loses desire for the rehydration drink. (more…)

WORMING YOUR HORSE OR GOAT: They really start begging for this. Give each animal several non-filter cigarettes each week. Keeps them from getting worms.

WORMING SWINE: Leave small lumps of coal in the pen. They will eat what they need to keep worm free.

KEEP SWINE FROM BITING EACH OTHER: Pigs are intelligent animals and get bored easily unless they are kept busy. They may have a tendency to bite the tails off of each other. Put toys in the pen for them to play with. Give them things that they can push around and get rough with. Old tires are good playthings for them. Look around and I’m sure you can find different things that you can put in with them. (more…)

Milk thistle is the time-honored treatment for all liver disorders, including cirrhosis, jaundice, and hepatitis. This herb contains silymarin, a potent flavonoid that fights free radical damage and exerts a protective effect on the liver (and kidneys). Milk thistle even stimulates the production of new liver cells.

DESCRIPTION AND PARTS USED

The milk thistle can be an annual or biennial, depending on climate. It grows naturally in dry, rocky soils in southern and western Europe and some parts of the United States. The branched stem attains a height of one to three feet and bears dark green, shiny leaves with spiny or scalloped edges that can be streaked with white along the veins. The plant puts forth one purple-red flower per stem; the plant is surrounded by sharp spines. The seeds, fruit, and leaves are all used for medicinal purposes. (more…)
