Once or twice a week a scrub or a mask makes an extra-deep cleansing and refining treatment. If your skin is sensitive do not use the scrub, nor should you steam your face, but do cleanse with your usual method very thoroughly. If your skin is not oversensitive, proceed as follows: Before applying a mask, your skin needs to be in a very clean, receptive state. Cleanse and rinse your skin using soap, lotion or cream, rinse thoroughly, or wipe over the skin with a herbal infusion. Leave the skin slightly damp. You may then apply the scrub or mask. Prepare a bowl of hot water to lean over. Cover your head with a towel and keep your face at least 1 ft (30 cm) from the water. Stay in this position for about ten minutes, and then apply the mask or scrub.

Simple Scrub

Mix:

Keep this mixture in a screw-top jar. Moisten a handful of the mixture with rose water and use to gently scrub at the skin. Rinse thoroughly and tone.

Basic Face Mask The simplest masks are based on an egg or two. To the egg(s) you can add any of the following: fine oatmeal, ground almonds, almond oil, wheatgerm oil, olive oil, cider vinegar, honey, liquidized cucumber, mashed banana, mashed avocado, small amounts of herbal infusions. Experiment with different combinations and textures. Apply to the skin, leave for at least twenty minutes while you lie down and relax, preferably with your feet raised slightly above the level of your head. Do not use masks around the eyes. You may also isolate some of the ingredients from the egg and use them on their own. For example: ground almonds, cucumber, rose water, oatmeal, honey or wheatgerm oil.

Fruit and Vegetable Cream

You can make this cleansing cream using peaches, water melon, cucumber or strawberries. In each case pulp and sieve the fruit.

  • 3 teaspoons beeswax
  • 4 teaspoons coconut oil
  • 5 teaspoons olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons fruit pulp
  • 1 teaspoon glycerine pinch borax

Melt the oils and beeswax together over a pan of boiling water. Meanwhile, heat the glycerine, borax and pulp until the borax has dissolved. Add the fruit mixture one drop at a time to the oils and wax mixture, stirring continuously. Keep mixing until the mixture is completely cool, then put into a jar and keep in the fridge. Use up as quickly as possible.
