A tisane is a type of herbal infusion. This one is made with meadowsweet, a powerful remedy for neutralizing stomach acid. It should help ease many nasty hangover symptoms.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) is one of the best antacid remedies for indigestion and heartburn and makes a very useful hangover remedy. It relieves embarrassing and painful wind and flatulence, stems diarrhoea and soothes intestinal spasms. It also has a protective and healing action on the bowel’s mucous membranes. Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century English herbalist, claimed that meadowsweet was of great help to those that were ‘troubled with the cholic, being boiled in wine’.

Pain-relieving properties

The herb has a powerful anti- inflammatory and pain-relieving action, which is attributed to the salicylate compounds found in the plant’s flowering tops and leaves. When oxidized these compounds yield salicylic acid, from which acetylsalicylic acid or aspirin can be derived. However unlike aspirin, meadowsweet also contains other constituents that protect the stomach lining while soothing painful, inflamed conditions.

To make a meadowsweet tisane, steep 25g/ 1 oz dried herb or 40g/ 1.5oz fresh herb in 600m1/1 pint/2.5cups of hot water, cover and infuse for about 10 minutes. This is enough to make a pot. For an extra boost, you could also try adding two to three dried clove buds to the pot. Cloves also help to reduce gas and have analgesic properties. They will give the brew a spicy lift.
