Symptoms
Abdominal bloating and pain. Belching.
Flatulence (passing rectal gas).
Treatment Options
Changes in diet—avoiding or limiting milk products, alcohol, carbonated beverages, and high-fiber foods like beans—can go a long way toward solving problems with excessive gas. Many people rely on over-the-counter medications containing the active ingredient simethicone, which can help break up gas bubbles in the large intestine. Alternative medicine offers a wide variety of natural treatments as well.
Acupressure
Pressing the following points may help to alleviate gas pains: Conception Vessel 6, Large Intestine 4, Spleen 6, and Stomach 36.
Acupuncture
A practitioner can provide treatment for gas using the same points used in acupressure.
Exercise
Moderate exercise after meals can help move gas through your system more quickly. In addition, following a regular program of exercise stimulates digestion and promotes the reabsorption and expulsion of gas.
Herbal Therapies
Anise water, made by steeping 1 tsp aniseeds in 1 cup water for 10 minutes, may be helpful. Teas made with peppermint (Mentha piperita), chamomile (Matricaria recutita), or fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) may also relieve gas pains.
Homeopathy
Carbo vegetabilis is the most commonly used homeopathic remedy, but Lycopodium is used as well. Nux vomica is used for gas associated with constipation, and Chamomilla is preferred for gas in infants. Talk to a homeopath about which is most suitable for you.
Hydrotherapy
To relieve gas pains, apply a hot compress (a washcloth soaked in hot water and then wrung out) the abdomen for several minutes, then follow with a cold friction rub: Soak a washcloth in ice water, wring it out, and rub it briskly over the abdomen for about half a minute.
Nutrition and Diet
Increase your fiber intake slowly and try avoiding beans, peas, and fermented foods such as cheese, soy sauce, and alcohol. Asafetida powder dispels intestinal gas and may be used as a spice with beans. Drink fewer carbonated drinks. Avoid mixing proteins and carbohydrates at the same meal. Do not overeat, and eat fewer different food items at one sitting. For people who are lactose intolerant, replacing cow’s milk with soybean milk or using lactose-reduced dairy products may help.
Reflexology
Consult a certified reflexologist for area locations that can be manipulated to help the digestive process in the stomach and intestines.
Yoga
Any of the yoga postures that compress and stretch the abdomen help stimulate digestion and thus reduce gas and bloating. Try the Bow, Cobra, or Pigeon positions.
Home Remedies
Dissolve a teaspoon or two of superfine white, green, or yellow French clay (available at health food stores) in water and drink at least once daily (but not with meals). The clay absorbs impurities and intestinal gas; check with your doctor to make sure it won’t absorb medications you may be taking.
Prevention
One of the main methods of preventing gas and gas pains is also the primary treatment: Avoid foods that generate gas in your system. Try to become more aware of the air that you swallow. You can avoid some gas, for instance, by not gulping your food; chew your food slowly and thoroughly.
