Include the following in the diet: oats, vitamin B, celery, comfrey, parsley, mustard, nettles, feverfew. Avoid red meat, alcohol and starchy foods. Replace refined flours with oats, mealiemeal and popcorn.
Comfrey
Make a tea (60 ml chopped leaves to 250 ml boiling water). Stand, steep, then drink when cool enough to tolerate. Sweeten with honey and a little apple cider vinegar. Drink daily.
Asthma
Include the following in the diet: carrots, apples, figs, guavas, garlic, horseradish, lemons, onions, green peppers, raisins and oranges.
Honeysuckle
Fill a bottle of honey with some honeysuckle flowers, ensuring that each is coated with honey. Eat a couple of spoonfuls daily to ease tightness and a chesty cough.
Ginger
Boil up a thumb-length piece of root in 1 litre water. Sweeten with honey. Sip a little frequently.
Comfrey
Include in the diet and make into a tea, using the standard brew. Sweeten with honey if desired, and drink daily.
Verbascum (mullein)
Make tea, using flowers and young leaves (standard brew). Sweeten with honey if desired and drink daily.
Violet
Make into a tea, using leaves and flowers (standard brew). Sweeten with honey if desired and drink daily.
Bluegum
Pick a bunch of fresh bluegum leaves. Cover with boiling water. Make a towel tent, covering the head and bowl, and inhale the fumes.
Astringent
Astringent herbs check excessive external and internal secretions (eg mucous membranes, skin, etc). These herbs can be made into teas, washes, douches, enemas and lotions. NB: Do not attempt douches or enemas without consulting your doctor. Pregnant women should not attempt either.
Herbs suitable for external use are: Columbine, Catnip, Oak bark, Myrtle and Camphor (leaves). Boil up in enough water to cover. Cool, strain, apply. Herbs suitable for internal use are: Salad burnet, Violet, Verbascum, Mint and Marjoram. Use 60-125 ml herb to 250 ml boiling water. Sip a cup 2-3 times a day.
Bedwetting
Here refrigerant herbs are needed, herbs which will soothe and calm; often the patient is highly strung or upset, and does not sleep well. He or she may also be plagued by nightmares.
Include the following in the diet: freshly grated carrot, celery, parsley, lemon balm (melissa), honey, lemon juice, brown rice, barley, oats, popcorn (freshly popped with a touch of sea salt). Avoid sweets, cakes, refined flours, sugars, carbonated drinks and condiments.
Catnip and marjoram tea
Take one thumb-length sprig of catnip and one thumb-length sprig of marjoram and pour over 60-125 ml boiling water. Stand, steep and strain. Sweeten with a little honey. When cool enough to drink, sip slowly just before going to sleep.
Other herbs which are effective in teas are: Lavender, Lemon balm, Lemon verbena, Hypericum (flowers) and Verbascum (mullein). Use the same standard brew.
