Sunburn is a common South African complaint throughout the long hot summer and one which we should take pains to avoid, for it has an ageing and drying effect on the skin.

Sun Protection Oil

This protecting oil should be applied before going out into the sun. The sesame oil blots out the harmful ultra-violet rays.

25 m1(2 tbsp) sesame oil

25 nil (2 tbsp) lanolin

75m1(6 tbsp) dandelion tea or elderflower tea

Herbal Beauty

Melt lanolin and oil in a double boiler. Slowly add the warm herb infusion. Mix well. Bottle and apply liberally to the skin.

Citrus Sun Oil

25ml (2 tbsp) sesame oil

25 m1(2 tbsp) grated lemon peel 25ml (2 tbsp) lanolin

50 ml (4 tbsp) strong tea

Melt lanolin and sesame oil in a double boiler. Add the lemon peel. Simmer on a low heat for half an hour. Add tea, and strain. Apply to the skin frequently when out in the sun.

Olive Oil Suntan Oil

37,5 ml (3 tbsp) olive oil 25 ml (2 tbsp) sesame oil

12,5 ml (1 tbsp) apple cider vinegar Few sprigs lemon balm or lemon verbena

Mix all ingredients together, pour into a bottle, and shake frequently. Apply before going out in the sun.

Soothing Cream for Sunburn

37,5 ml (3 tbsp) anhydrous lanolin

12,5 ml (1 tbsp) wheatgerm oil

37,5 ml (3 tbsp) strong comfrey tea, using root and leaf, 250 ml (1 cup) herb to 250 ml (1 cup) boiling water

37,5 ml (3 tbsp) apple cider vinegar

Blend all ingredients in a blender. Bottle and apply to painful areas.
