During any type of illness, our bodies increase their normal processes of detoxification. For example, when you come down with a cold or the flu, you naturally lose your appetite, because your body wants to focus attention on cleansing. You may run a fever, the body’s natural internal mechanism for killing trouble-causing microorganisms. You may have copious mucus discharge and sneezing as your body attempts to expell the invaders. You can support your body in detoxifying and significantly cut short the duration of a cold or flu with cleansing therapies such as aromatherapy steams and mineral baths, purifying teas, and potent herbal remedies. In fact, by incorporating the principles of cleansing and detoxification into your daily life, you will be far less likely to fall prey to colds and flus.
My friend Maryanne used to come down with a cold or flu virus several times each year, and be sick for weeks at a time. When she asked for advice, I suggested that she eliminate refined foods, dairy products, and sugar, all of which weaken the immune system and create congestion.
