An herbal steam inhalation is an excellent method for loosening congestion and cleansing the lungs. Steam inhalations are particularly helpful for relieving chronic sinusitis, respiratory congestion, bronchitis, and colds and flus, and can be used as often as desired for treating these conditions. The warm steam eases congested breathing, and the volatile essential oils from the herbs release their healing vapors into the steam and help to cleanse the lungs while promoting the expulsion of mucus. Adding antimicrobial herbs such as thyme, eucalyptus, or peppermint to an herbal steam helps to fight infection in the lungs.

To make an herbal steam inhalation, place 1 1/2 quarts of water in a large pot with 2 tablespoons each of dried thyme and peppermint. Bring the water to a boil over medium heat, cover, and turn off the heat. Allow the herbs to steep for 10 minutes. Place the pot on a table, remove the lid, and cover your head and the pot of steaming herbs with a large towel. Breathe in the steam, taking care not to burn yourself. Stay under the towel tent for 15 minutes, lifting the towel as necessary to regulate the steam.

Mustard Mustard Plaster to Relieve Lung Congestion

A stimulating mustard plaster is excellent for breaking up deep lung congestion and helping the lungs to expel mucus. This plaster is helpful for treating chronic bronchitis, colds, flus, and other respiratory problems, and can be applied either to the chest or to the upper back. To make the plaster, mix 2 tablespoons of powdered mustard and 4 tablespoons of flour with enough hot water to make a spreadable paste. Dip a thin cotton dish towel into hot water and wring it out. Spread the mustard paste onto the towel and fold the towel to make a flat pack, with the mustard paste on the inside of the pack. Place the pack directly on the chest or the upper back and cover the entire area with a thick towel. Leave the plaster in place for about 20 minutes, lifting a corner of the plaster every few minutes to make sure that the mustard is not burning the skin. A feeling of warmth and a healthy pink color indicates that the plaster is working, but if an uncomfortable burning sensation, redness, or irritation occurs, remove the plaster.
