Alternating hot and cold footbaths is another pleasurable method for increasing lymphatic flow. Gravity naturally pulls lymph down to your feet, and the stimulating effects of hot and cold water help to move stagnant lymph. You’ll need two buckets, each one large enough to hold both of your feet. Fill one bucket with water as hot as you can tolerate, and fill the other with cold water. The water should be deep enough to cover your feet to above your ankles. For additional stimulating and detoxifying benefits, mix 5 drops each of rosemary and juniper essential oils in 1 teaspoon of witch hazel and add to the bucket of hot water. Sit in a comfortable chair, place your feet in the bucket of hot water, and relax for 3 minutes. Immediately plunge your feet into the bucket of cold water for 30 seconds. Repeat this sequence 3 times, ending with the cold water plunge. Pat your feet dry, and finish with long, sweeping massage strokes with the palms of your hands up your calves and thighs to draw the lymph upward.
Lymph-Purifying Herbal Tea
Herbs that improve lymphatic function are those with specific immune-enhancing properties, such as echinacea and goldenseal, and others which are traditionally used as lymphatic cleansers, such as red clover and cleavers. Lymph cleansing herbs are helpful when included as part of a detoxification program to stimulate cell purification. In addition, potent antimicrobial herbs such as echinacea and goldenseal are especially helpful for boosting lymphatic function at any time when the body is battling an infection. If it’s spring, you can probably find the herbs for this tea in your own backyard. Consult a good herbal identification book if you are not familiar with the plants.
