Cascara sagrada is a gentle yet effective stimulant laxative. Licorice soothes the intestinal tract and has mild laxative properties, and ginger root helps to prevent any possible cramping
1 teaspoon cascara sagrada bark
Place herbs in 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil, turn off the heat, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain, and drink before bed.
Laxative Tincture
This tincture is excellent for relieving occasional constipation. It’s great to take along while traveling for sluggish bowels.
1/2 ounce cascara sagrada
Powder the herbs in a blender or coffee grinder. Place in a clean glass jar and add enough vodka to cover the herbs, plus 2 inches. Let steep in a warm, dark place and give the jar a gentle shake every day. After 3 weeks, strain the alcohol from the herbs through several layers of cheesecloth. Rebottle in a dark glass container, and store away from heat and light. Take 1 dropperful of tincture in a small amount of warm water before bed. Repeat the dosage in the morning if necessary.
Herbal Formulas for the Health of Kidneys
Gentle Diuretic Tea
This tea is excellent for gently purifying the kidneys and for alleviating premenstrual water retention.
3 teaspoons dandelion leaf
3 teaspoons marshmallow root
1 teaspoon anise seeds, if desired for flavor
Pour 3 cups of boiling water over the herbs. Cover, and let steep until cool. Drink 3 cups throughout the day.
Antiseptic Diuretic Tincture
This tincture will help to relieve urinary tract infections. Take at the very first sign of an infection, usually burning upon urination and an increased need to urinate. In addition, drink at least 3 cups daily of Gentle Diuretic Tea, along with copious amounts of water to help flush out the bladder and urinary tract. Uva ursi, juniper berries, and yarrow all have potent antimicrobial properties.
1/4 ounce uva ursi
1/4 ounce juniper berries
1/4 ounce yarrow
Powder herbs in a blender. Take 1 dropperful of tincture in a small amount of warm water 4 times daily at the first sign of an infection until the symptoms abate. If symptoms do not begin to subside within 24 hours, or if there is blood in the urine or fever, consult your health care practitioner.
