Dandelion, burdock, and Oregon grape root have bitter principles and are classic liver-cleansing herbs. Ginger and orange peel help to move stagnant energy in the liver. When simmered together, this makes a delicious tea that can be enjoyed daily during your cleansing program.
2 teaspoons burdock root
2 teaspoons Oregon grape root
1 teaspoon organic orange peel
Place herbs and 1 quart of water in a covered pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat, lower the heat, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep an additional 15 minutes, or longer if desired. Strain and drink 3 to 4 cups throughout the day.
Purifying Aloe Drink
In Ayurvedic medicine, aloe is considered to be a rejuvenative for the liver. Western medicine has discovered that aloe has powerful healing properties for the entire gastrointestinal tract. Buy pure aloe vera juice that has no artificial additives or preservatives. “Green supplements” such as chlorella provide a boost of cleansing chlorophyll.
4 ounces aloe vera juice
4 ounces organic apple juice, if desired
1 teaspoon chlorella, spirulina, or powdered barley grass pinch of powdered ginger
Mix all ingredients together and drink first thing in the morning
Liver Tonic Capsules
Turmeric is a member of the ginger family and is a primary liver- cleansing herb in Ayurvedic medicine. It has powerful antioxidant properties and helps to protect the liver against toxins. It is also the main ingredient in curry powder. Turmeric seems to be absorbed best when taken with fats such as olive oil or ghee. Cultivate a taste for Indian cooking, or take these capsules with meals. Turmeric stains, so use care when putting these capsules together
1/2 ounce powdered ginger root
Gelatin capsules, size OO
Mix the powdered herbs together in a deep, flat dish. Take the capsules apart, and fill the capsules by scooping the top and the bottom halves toward each other through the powdered herbs. Push the 2 halves together. Take 1 or 2 capsules twice daily with meals.
Liver-Strengthening Tincture
Dandelion, yellow dock, barberry, and Oregon grape root stimulate bile flow and are some of the best liver-cleansing herbs. Milk thistle seeds have the unique ability to stimulate liver regeneration. If you have a serious liver disease, avoid alcohol-based tinctures. Take milk thistle as a standardized extract or eat a couple of tablespoons of milk thistle seeds daily. They must be powdered to release their healing properties. Grind them in a coffee grinder and sprinkle onto hot cereal, salads, or soups.
1/4 ounce barberry or Oregon grape root
Vodka
Powder the herbs in a blender. Place in a clean glass jar and add enough vodka to cover herbs, plus 2 inches. Let steep in a warm, dark place and give the jar a gentle shake every day. After 3 weeks, strain the alcohol from the herbs through several layers of cheesecloth. Rebottle in a dark glass container, and store away from heat and light. Take 1dropperful of tincture before meals 2 to 3 times daily in a small amount of warm water.
