Epsom Salt Detoxifying Soak
Posted by arlene under Bath , Beauty , Health , Herbs , Leaves , Massage , Relax , Spa , TeaYou’ll need:
- 2 cups Epsom salts (available at any pharmacy)
- 5-10 drops lavender, marjoram, or essential oil of your choice
- 1 teaspoon distilled witch hazel
A hot Epsom salts bath has powerful detoxifying properties, and is best taken at least 2 hours after eating. In addition to their purifying benefits, Epsom salts are rich in magnesium, which eases sore muscles and induces relaxation. Try an Epsom salts cleansing soak immediately before bedtime for a peaceful night’s sleep.
Fill your bathtub with comfortably hot water, adding 2 cups of Epsom salts to the tub while the water is running. Stir the water with your hand to dissolve the salts. For additional detoxifying benefits, dry brush your body to stimulate circulation before entering the tub. Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oils if desired, diluting in 1 teaspoon of witch hazel and adding to the water just before entering the bath. Disperse the essential oils throughout the water with your hand. Soak for 15 to 30 minutes, immersing as much of your body as possible in the water. Add hot water as needed to maintain a comfortably hot temperature.
As you drain the water from the tub, imagine that any toxins and stress that you have been carrying are being released by your body and are swirling down the drain with the bathwater. Rinse your body gently with tepid water, pat yourself dry with a soft towel, and climb into bed for a relaxing sleep.
Sea and Earth Mineral Bath
You’ll need:
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1/2 cup Epsom salts
- 1/2 cup sea salt
- 5-10 drops lavender, geranium, or essential oil of your choice
- 1 teaspoon distilled witch hazel
This bath combines minerals from the sea and earth for a concentrated mineral soak. Ojo Caliente, a spa in northern New Mexico, has a delightful natural soda mineral pool. The addition of baking soda to your bathwater replicates this soothing mineral soak, and will leave your skin soft and smooth.
Fill your bathtub with comfortably warm water. Add the Epsom salts, baking soda, and sea salt to the tub while the water is running, stirring the water with your hand to dissolve the minerals. Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil if desired, diluting first in 1 teaspoon of witch hazel and stirring the mixture into the bathwater with your hand. Relax in the tub for 15 to 30 minutes, immersing as much of your body as possible in the water. Add hot water as needed to maintain the water at a comfortably warm temperature. Rinse with tepid water; gently pat yourself dry with a soft towel, and rest.
Seaweed Bath
You’ll need:
2 ounces of kelp, wakame, or dulse (available at natural foods stores)
Mineral-rich seaweed baths are offered at the finest health and beauty spas for their detoxifying and skin-renewing properties. Spas generally add powdered dried seaweeds to soaking tubs. You can powder dry seaweeds in your blender if you desire, but soaking in a tubful of whole sea fronds is a delightful sensory experience. Dried seaweeds expand when added to water, and 2 ounces will fill your tub with floating seaweeds you’ll feel that you’re swimming in the ocean!
Fill your bathtub full of comfortably hot water. Add the seaweeds while the tub is filling, allowing them to soak for 10 minutes to expand fully before stepping into the tub. Treat yourself to a dry brush skin massage while the seaweeds are soaking, and add additional hot water to the tub if necessary. Enter the bath, covering your body with the sea fronds, and soak for 15 to 20 minutes.
Eucalyptus-Seaweed Detoxifying Soak
You’ll need:
1/2 cup powdered kelp (grind in blender)
5-10 drops eucalyptus essential oil 1 teaspoon distilled witch hazel
Optional: ginger tea (if you have a cold or flu)
This powerful cleansing bath combines the detoxifying benefits of Epsom salts and seaweed with the antiseptic and purifying properties of eucalyptus essential oil. Eucalyptus is an excellent remedy for any type of respiratory illness—try this bath the next time you feel that you might be coming down with a cold or flu. Dilute the eucalyptus oil in witch hazel before adding to the bathwater to prevent any possible skin sensitivity to the concentrated essential oil. Add the mixture just before you enter the bath—essential oils are volatile and will dissipate quickly if added while the hot water is running.
To prepare the bath, grind the kelp into a powder in a blender along with one-half cup of sea salt. Fill your bathtub with comfortably hot water. Add the sea salt and kelp mixture along with the Epsom salts while the tub is filling, stirring the salts into the water to help them dissolve. The seaweed will not dissolve in the water Combine the eucalyptus essential oil with the witch hazel and add to the tub just before entering, dispersing the mixture through the water with your hand.
Enter the tub, and soak for 20 to 30 minutes, adding hot water as needed to keep the water at a comfortable temperature. Visualize toxins and cold or flu viruses being eliminated by your body as you perspire. Allow the water to drain from the tub, rinse gently with tepid water, pat yourself dry with a soft towel, and rest.
