EYE WASH: Add 1 teaspoon of eyebright to 1 cup boiling water. Let steep 15 minutes. Strain well and cool. Use this as an eye wash. Fennel, elder flowers, or verbena can also be used. Helps tired eyes and eye strain. Very helpful when conjunctivitis is present.

EYE WASH: Mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 1 /4 cup of hot water. Cool the mixture slightly and use with eye cup for gentle wash.

BLOODSHOT EYES: Apply a few drops of castor oil to the eyes to clear the redness from them.

INFLAMED EYES: Pour 1 cup boiling water over 2 tablespoons of yarrow flowers. Steep for 10 minutes. Strain and dip clean cloth in liquid and apply to eyes as a compress. (more…)

The things we hear, see, smell and taste make our lives interesting. So, whenever any of these senses is dulled or impaired by illness, it makes our world a little grayer. Luckily, Mother Nature provides us with different kinds of herbs to help remedy the situation. Over the years, we humans have managed to take nature’s gifts and make them into good remedies.

EARACHE REMEDIES: Heat seems to help stop earache pain. Place a warm damp washcloth over the ear and lay ear on a heating pad to keep warm. Pain that persists should be seen by your physician, as it could signal an ear infection or eardrum perforation. (more…)

ANISEED SLEEPER: Use 1 teaspoon of aniseed for each cup of water. Brew for about 20 minutes. Strain and sweeten. Induces sleep and aids in indigestion.

INSOMNIA: Eating an apple before bedtime seems to help put you to sleep.

INSOMNIA TREATMENT: Add 1 teaspoon pennyroyal herb to 1 cup boiling water. Let steep 15 minutes. Strain and sweeten. Drink warm before bed. Caution: Not to be used by pregnant women. (more…)

SOOTHING BATH FOR TENSION HEADACHES: Put 1 ounce each of mugwort, valerian, chamomile, and agrimony to 1 pint of boiling water. Allow to simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and add to bath water. Very good for aching muscles.

MILD SEDATIVE: Pour 1 pint boiling water over 1 teaspoon of dried catnip. Cover and steep until cool. Flavor if desired. Strain and sweeten. For children, give 1 tablespoon; adults get 2 tablespoons.

HOP SEDATIVE: Pour 1 quart boiling water over 1-1/2 teaspoons dried hops flowers. Let steep, covered, 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten. Add lemon juice if desired. (more…)
