This sweet herb is an excellent overall tonic and blood purifier that fights infection and has relaxant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is, therefore, valuable in the treatment of irritated lungs, whooping cough, and many conditions where inflammation is a complication, including arthritis, gout, AIDS, and certain skin disorders. Red clover tea also works well as an appetite suppressant. It is traditionally used to help strengthen the system and restore vitality and energy. Because it is mild, red clover is even considered suitable for weak children.
DESCRIPTION AND PARTS USED
Red clover is a plant of the pastures. You’ve probably seen it when You were driving through the country. It is distinguished by its trefoil leaves and globes of small raspberry-red flowers. The whole plant has mild sedative properties, but it is the flower heads that are valued for their medicinal properties.
Every health authority on the planet agrees that those who eat a typical westernized diet low in fruits and vegetables and full of processed and manufactured foods need more fiber. Psyllium seeds can fill that need. However, it’s necessary to start slowly and give your body time to get used to the increased fiber. Taking too much initially can cause gassiness and stomach discomfort. Given time, your body will adjust and the health benefits are great. Remember, the experts say drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day is important when adding fiber to the diet.
HISTORICAL NOTES
In one old herbal, red clover is described as being “God’s greatest herbal blessing to mankind.” The trinity of leaves joined at the stem was once considered evidence of the divine powers of this herb. That may be, but information about the historical uses ofred clover is meager.
Native Americans used a weak tea of red clover to treat “sore eyes” and made a salve of it to treat burns. During the Industrial Revolution, red clover tea was the treatment of choice for “wasting diseases” such as rickets, tuberculosis, and cancer. One source revealed that the dried and ground blossoms of red clover were once smoked as an antiasthmatic treatment.
SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS
Red clover is not only a good medicinal, it qualifies as a good dietary supplement, too. Analysis shows this herb supplies vitamins A, B complex, C, F, and P. It contains choline, inositol, coumarins, glycosides, and a nice supply of minerals as well, including iron, selenium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and copper.
TRADITIONAL USE
Internal. To enjoy the tonic and blood-cleansing effects of red clover, follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the amount of herb to use per cup and brew a strong tea. Strain, add honey, and sip hot.
External. Red clover is said to cure even “old sores” when used as a wash or poultice.
CONSIDERATIONS
All sources seem to agree that red clover is both mild and safe.
